Just joking! This is why you SHOULD have chickens! Owning, raising, harvesting and keeping chickens as a family can provide numerous benefits for anyone. Doesn't matter if you live in city limits that allow poultry, to a farmstead. Chickens will be providing fresh eggs to offering their amazing companionship and are a valuable addition to any home. In this section, we will explore the benefits of each of these aspects of chicken ownership.

Raising chickens offers several amazing benefits for families. They provide a source of fresh eggs that are free from any additives or hormones found in store-bought eggs. Farm fresh eggs are known for their nutritional value and can be used for baking those amazing cakes, the scrumptious omelets, and many other delicious recipes. Additionally, raising chickens can be a fun and educational activity for children. They can learn about animal care, responsibility, and the importance of sustainability.

One of the main challenges of raising chickens is ensuring their well-being. Chickens need a consistent supply of food and water, as well as a clean living environment. They also require regular veterinary care and protection from predators. However, with proper care and supervision, these challenges can be overcome, and the benefits of raising chickens can be enjoyed.

Harvesting your own chickens is a rewarding and empowering experience as well. It allows you to take control of your food supply and know exactly where your chickens are raised and what they are fed. Harvesting your own chickens also means that you can enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that your food is free from antibiotics, hormones, and other chemicals commonly found in commercially produced meat. Leading to a healthier diet for you and yours.

One of the challenges of harvesting your own chickens is the physical labor involved. It involves slaughtering and processing the meat, which can be a daunting task for some individuals. Especially if you have a lot of chickens to process. However, there are resources available that offer step-by-step guides on how to properly harvest chickens. Additionally, there are butchering services available in some areas that can help with the entire process.

Keeping chickens as a family offers numerous benefits. They provide companionship and entertainment to young and old. Chickens are social creatures and each one of them has their own special personality and they love interacting with humans. Unless you end up with feral chickens like I did at one point. One of our favorite past times has been watching them roam around and engage in their daily activities and has been a source of joy and relaxation.

Chickens also contribute to maintaining a healthy garden. They act as natural pest control, eating harmful insects and larvae. They also produce waste that is rich in nitrogen and can be used as fertilizer for plants. Talk about a homesteading win!

Keeping chickens requires dedication and commitment. They need a safe and secure coop, regular feeding and cleaning, and protection from predators. However, with proper care, keeping chickens can be a rewarding experience that brings joy and satisfaction to the whole family.

In conclusion, owning, raising, harvesting, and keeping chickens as a family can bring a wide range of benefits. From fresh eggs to companionship to maintaining a healthy garden, chickens can be a valuable addition to any home. While there may be challenges involved in caring for chickens, the rewards make it all worthwhile. So, if you're considering adding chickens to your family, take a step back and consider the many benefits they offer.
